Why you should be using the assembly line method
Tricks of the Trade with Electrician Sean Burridge
Invented by Henry Ford, the assembly line aims to simplify and shorten the time needed to fully assemble a product. First used in 1913, this process allowed Ford to configure a vehicle in the record timeframe of 1 hour and 30 minutes as opposed to the standard 12 hours. Used mostly in mass production, this method allows for a dramatic increase in efficiency as it encourages workers to be trained in specialized skills as opposed to spending time perfecting numerous unique steps.
How it works
Workers are stationed in a line and assigned an individual task. As the product is moved down the line, the workers complete their task and hand it to the next worker in line responsible for the next step. Removing any excess time that would have been spent relocating or familiarizing yourself with the tools and task, the assembly line’s main benefit is time optimization.
Who can use it
This method can be applied to any, if not all lines of production. Electrician & friend Sean Burridge offers the use of the assembly line as his best trick of the trade, stating: “If you need to do something twice or 40 times, best way to do it is an assembly line. If you need to pick up a tool, you should get the full use of it and then move to the next step”. Burridge mentions that eliminating the time in between switching tools has increased his efficiency during work.
The benefits
Apart from the obvious benefit of time efficiency, it is also known to be excellent for optimizing mass production, ensuring product uniformity, having high quality products and improving overall profit due to the speed of which products can be produced. From a small business to a large-scale production, this method allows for great results!
